The Medical Speciality of Dermatology

A dermatologist is a physician specially trained in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the skin, hair, nails, and mucous membranes. Over a thousand conditions, including innumerable rashes, tumors, growths, and cancers may affect the skin. Treatments may be medical or surgical. Medical treatment consists of the use of externally applied medications, those taken by mouth, and special treatments with ultraviolet light. Skin surgery may be done with instruments, by freezing (cryosurgery), the use of chemicals (chemosurgery) or electric current (electrosurgery), and with lasers.
